The Rutter Estate
our beloved home & studio
Purchased in 2020, our 1891 century home and studio is undergoing a slow, but steady, design-build renovation. We are working room by room, honoring the home's legacy and style while incorporating modern design influences, bringing it back from the depths of despair.
On the weekends you’ll find us replacing rotten wood, cleaning up old hardware, at the local antique shop; and quietly enjoying all the Hudson Valley has to offer. Please stop by, we’d love to share a piece of us with you.
an -ever evolving- physical sketchbook of ideas.
Our house has slowly become a playground for compositions. A dichotomy of old and new.
Below is a showcase of some spaces before/in-progress/(almost) finished...
primary bedroom
the overwhelming scent of the carpet, cracking walls, and stains hinted at the previous owners' struggle with this demanding property, especially evident in this particular room. our first task was to rip out the old carpet and padding, initiating a multi-year renovation. we added structural supports, reconfigured walls, built a walk-in closet, installed two new windows, sourced vintage doors/windows, and created a double vanity among many other changes. This once neglected space has been utterly transformed into a warm and inviting sanctuary.

upstairs hall
stained, cracked, crumbling down as we walked. the upstairs hallway was in desperate need of a facelift. beadboard ceiling painted in high gloss, offset with dark wainscot and modern ff&e touches create a moody and intimate space leading to the bedrooms
